About Us
Helen and Brendan Doherty are a married couple, originally from Co.Wicklow. They moved to Westmeath five years ago and have lovingly restored the old buildings, breathing new life into the ancient stones. "There is such a sense of peace and history. The house is here since before the Famine" Feeling privileged to live in this tranquil setting and responding to favourable comments from friends and family who have come to stay, they decided to open their doors to the wider community so that others can avail of that peace.
"We see Caraiosa Centre as a place where balance can be restored..a centre of psycho-spirituality. Working from the belief that distress can be physical, psychological, emotional or spiritual and can lead to inner imbalance or disharmony, we offer a place where that current distress can be addressed, so leading to the beginnings of healing for the person. As Christians, we welcome people of all religious beliefs or none"
Helen is a registered general and paediatric nurse with many years experience in a wide range of diciplines.
"Moving from the physical and medical care of patients, to the psychological, emotional and spiritual care of clients was a natural progression...I believe one enhances and compliments the other." Helen has worked over many years in palliative care and bereavement work, tutoring, sacramental programs and retreat facilitation, spiritual guidance, counselling and psychotherapy.
Brendan has worked for many years in medical technical sales. This work has brought him in contact with people at their most vulnerable ... patients and clients in hospitals, nursing homes and special care units throughout Ireland. He has studied theology in the Milltown Institute and prayer guidance at Manresa House. He holds a qualification in holistic massage from I.T.E.C. He has a fascination and deep love for history and mythology. "I love the Midlands. The area is steeped in mythology and Celtic folklore.'" Brendan will be delighted to share some of this wisdom with you during your stay at Caraiosa.
Walks can be arranged to visit some sites of historical interest.
We are a dog loving family. Our 2 beautiful Collies, Chubbs & Chancer have their own garden and will do their best not to disturb you but may bark with excitement on your arrival !
